In mold injection processing, gate design is closely related to various factors, including the size and shape of the plastic part, mold structure, injection process conditions, and the performance of the plastic material. According to DAYIN Plastic’s insights, the gate’s cross-section should be kept small and short to increase flow speed, allow for rapid cooling and sealing, facilitate part separation, and minimize gate marks.
To improve filling and holding pressure effects, the gate should ideally be placed at the thickest part of the product. If the holding pressure is insufficient, the thinner areas will solidify faster than the thicker ones. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid placing the gate at locations where there is a significant change in thickness, as this can lead to flow hesitation or short shot defects.
Ideally, if conditions allow, it is recommended to inject plastic from the center of the product. Placing the gate centrally provides a more uniform flow path, reduces the need for higher injection pressure, and ensures even holding pressure in all directions, preventing uneven volumetric shrinkage.

When plastic flows into the runner, the material closest to the mold surface is often the first to cool and solidify. The subsequent flow primarily pushes the solidified layer forward. Although plastic has low thermal conductivity, the solid plastic forms an insulating layer, allowing the material to retain its flowability. Therefore, under ideal conditions, the gate should be placed at the cross-section of the runner to achieve optimal flow performance. This scenario typically applies to round and hexagonal runners, where the gate can be positioned centrally. However, trapezoidal runners do not allow for this, as the gate cannot be placed in the middle of the runner.

Gate Position: Techniques Beyond the Textbook
Textbook gate rules start the conversation; production experience finishes it:
| Technique | Where it earns | The experience behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Gate in non-visible geometry | Cosmetics kept clean | Vestige polishes, texture hides |
| Flow-leader gates | Thick sections packed first | Pressure follows the shortest path |
| Sequential valve gating | Weld lines walked to safe ground | Fronts met where the part is strong |
| Gate for degating access | Maintenance cost halved | Serviced gates, not sacrificed ones |
The valve-gating row is the technique with the steepest payoff curve: timed valve pins walk the weld line across the part like a controllable seam, and placements that were fixed compromises become designed decisions — worth it where cosmetics and structure meet, unnecessary where one gate tells the whole story. The access row is the maintainer’s contribution: a gate positioned where degating tools reach lives a clean life, while its inaccessible cousin accumulates nicks that print onto every part. The flow-leader row keeps physics in the room — packing pressure is lazy, and gates that meet the melt where the mass lives deliver it where shrinkage would otherwise settle. Position technique, accumulated this way, is a large share of what buyers are really purchasing when they pay for an experienced molder. The design-fundamentals frame is in gate placement fundamentals, and the short-shot link in short-shot factors. Reference: gating practice and weld line control.
